The Doctor and Ruby - the Lewk

The Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday.

Ruby’s mot that different from Millie Gibson’s out of character intro look, but Ncuti Gatwa’s is a lot more different than the keyhole shirtless suit he was rocking at the BAFTAs.

Children In Need

Children In Need has been very good to Doctor Who, and vice versa, over the years. Hence my seriesful post.

Millie Gibson is Ruby Sunday!

“I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion. It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me.”
Millie Gibson, after introducing new companion Ruby Sunday on BBC Children In Need tonight

Millie Gibson with Mcuti Gatwa

“As a Coronation Street fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday!”
Russell T Davies

Regeneration surprises

For obvious reasons I was thinking about regeneration episodes, and how the last time one surprised me was Four to Five, when I was six. These days they’re hyped up immensely. Or spoiled by newspapers, like Nine leaving so early.

The closest we got was Ten not quite regenerating a year early. For a week, we were wondering if they’d actually done it - I guessed not as I’d seen press coverage of filming The Next Doctor, but it was fun to speculate.

The Power Of The Doctor

The Power Of The Doctor

Bits of it worked great for me. Other bits didn’t.

Siberia, early 20th century. Are we doing Tunguska? Oh, apparently not. That was 1908.

So the Master with a Rasputin look is actually doing Rasputin...

Has Doctor Who never done a Rasputin episode? Apparently not. Nearly during the Capaldi run. And apparently the Boney M joke was in that script.

Sacha Dhawan playing the adviser to another Russian monarch is an odd but of typecasting.

The BBC at 100

The British Broadcasting Corporation was founded (as the preceding British Broadcasting Company) on October 18th 1922.

The trailer of The Power Of The Doctor

Two weeks and a day ahead, the trailer of The Power Of The Doctor is now on the computer via the site of the Times of the Radio and I’ll stop now.

Sunday the 23rd.

All the monsters.

Love the regenerating flame logo.

Inside Man

Inside Man, Steven Moffat’s new miniseries starring David Tennant, starts tonight. Sounds dark. Doesn’t have any spaceships so I’ve hardly seen anybody talking about it.

Doctor Who Worlds Of Wonder exhibition

Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder exhibition coming here to the National Museum of Scotland in December! Looking at the science of the series, as well as some monster visiting.

Ten plots from Ziggy Stardust

David Bowie released The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars fifty years ago today.

So naturally after creating adventure hooks riffing on his album titles and songs from , The Next Day, Reality, Heathen, Hours and Earthling...

Some are informed by the song concepts, but not directly.

Blink at 15

Happy 15th anniversary to Blink, birthplace of the Weeping Angels, and a great episode to introduce new viewers... sometimes, because they might want the Sparrow and Nightingale series instead.

Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor!

Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor! One of the stars of Sex Education, interviewed here for it. And here for Doctor Who!

“It was our last audition. It was our very last one. We thought we had someone, and then in he came and stole it. I’m properly, properly thrilled. It’s going to be a blazing future.”
Russell T Davies

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”
Ncuti Gatwa, talking to the BBC

A perfect demonstration from a Sex Education clip.

The Centenary Special

Tonight we ended with a trailer for the next special, coming in... probably October or thereabouts for the BBC centenary... will be the Thirteenth Doctor’s bow.

Legend Of The Sea Devils

Some sword fighting!

Rather more technobabble.

I like the Doctor trying to let Yaz down gently, but I’m also aware guy Doctors never did that with straight companion crushes.

Nice of the Sea Devil leader to leave his translator on when talking to his crew with no humans around. :D Cool coat though!

Doctor Who: Redacted

Doctor Who: Redacted - an in-universe podcast at BBC Sounds, about three young conspiracy theorists wondering why a blue box keeps turning up throughout history.

Hugh Grant is too obvious

And not the Paddington cast member I most want as the Doctor. Which is Paddington.

I’m disappointed that no lazy journalists have picked up my list of over 30 semi-viable Doctor Who casting ideas.

(Still all in for Jessie Buckley personally.)

Happy birthday Ian!

Happy 50th birthday to Ian of my regular-ish group and DWAITAS playtest, a bigger Whovian than I!

Thanks, young man. I’m looking forward to a team-up with some of my earlier incarnations!

Doctors And Daleks

Doctors And Daleks, a Doctor Who adaptation for Dungeons & Dragons 5e, coming soon. The announcement also promises more support for the second edition of the Vortex version.

Update:
Current plans are a player's guide, a bestiary (Alien Archive), an adventure book and maybe a GM screen. And that's it. If it proves very popular we may convert some older books but it's a limited line

Russell T Davies on coming home

RTD talks to Radio Times about returning to Doctor Who.

“I just like looking at a new set of challenges every time and another blank page, but Doctor Who is always a blank page.”

The Time Traveller's Wife

Steven Moffat’s TV adaptation of The Time Traveller’s Wife debuts this spring.

“I do love a time travel story in general, as my career would suggest.”

My hearts beat for you

We’ve never had a Doctor Who Valentine’s Day special, though we have had books and comics including an Al Capone historical story and an alien Cupid making people fall in love to distract them from a resorce grab.

Weird sudden love is the obvious go-to plot for the day, as seen in mythology, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Valentine’s episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and at least two long-running series of deodorant adverts that once escalated to an apocalyptic breakdown of society.

And the big question is... will the players let their PCs be affected?

Sesame Of The Daleks

In a month, Elmo has escalated froma rguing with a rock over a cookie to forging an alliance with the Daleks. Big Bird, clearly an incarnation of the Doctor, needs to step in.

Nine plots from David Bowie's Earthling

David Bowie’s 1997 album Earthling has one of his most science fictional titles.

After album titles, , The Next Day, Reality, Heathen and Hours, adventures based on the album’s song titles...

Little Wonder
First contact with an alien race is treated with... passing interest. The humanoid castaway becomes a minor celebrity, someone to get selfies with as he wanders the city examining the art with bemusement. Of course someone’s going to come looking...

Looking For Satellites
1957, and Sputnik makes worldwide news. An attempt to launch a rival satellite ends in a crash landing in the Home Counties... and something hitched a ride.

Battle For Britain (The Letter)
1997, and Britannia momentarily seems Cool. To the extent that we have alien art dealers coming to try to seize the whole island.

Seven Years In Tibet
“Why do you want to climb that mountain?”
“Because there’s a vital part of a crashed TARDIS on... I mean, because it’s there.”

Dead Man Walking
The travellers meet people who saw them go to certain death saving the world a week ago.

Telling Lies
Due to a TARDIS translation glitch, everybody loses the ability to lie.

The Last Thing You Should Do
The Stranger receives a letter from her last incarnation, warning her of how they died and that she’s about to follow suit.

I’m Afraid Of Americans
The Stranger discovers that one of the books about her is about to be filmed. Rather badly.

Law (Earthlings On Fire)
The Megaera declare that a group of human explorers has trespassed. They must be executed, and their planet of origin destroyed...

What brings you here?

Five reasons for aliens to visit Earth with science fiction examples at Tor. The Doctor comes to get milk and likes to keep up on telly so 2 and 3, and has to stop 1, 4 and 5 fairly regularly.

And five reasons not to, none of them as amusing.

EVE Online x Doctor Who

Daleks and time travellers in EVE Online x Doctor Who, a crossover happening in the online game. Given that EVE is about cutthroat space fighting and grasping capitalism, this seems like an odd fit.

Saturday 1 January 2022

Eve Of The Daleks

I just about enjoyed Eve Of The Daleks but BLOODY HELL you do not share a confidence like that.

Plus points: Aisling Bea as Sarah being bolshy and funny and Doctor-y, Adjani Salmon as Nick being sympathetic in his oddness and crush on Sarah, the contained nature of the plot, the actual tie-ins to New Year, the mostly not underselling of the Daleks, Dan saying Groundhog Day and his pep talk to Yaz.

Next up, historical pirate queen and Sea Devils. One of those solid historical and monster crossovers.

Happy New Year!

Where applicable.
